There is not one piece of Irish Legislation written that makes it a
punishable offense

All the draconian Irish Immigration legislation of
recent years has been to remove rights and dignity of Genuine Marriage.

I can still see McDowell introducing his 'Fields of Athenry" legislation
allowing him to deport the spouse of Irish Citizens for criminal offenses.
He said it was to combat bogus marriages.

It really seems they want to maintain the allegations of sham
marriages, so they can keep introducing further draconian
Immigration legislation at will.

This is a good strategy and timing, it shows the Government
has failed to deal directly with Sham Marriage, but instead
put their efforts in bad law like the Metock and the STAMP-4/3 mess
and reverse discrimination against Irish.
And the current Bill, while draconian in the extreme, still does
not touch Sham Marriage, its more bad law.

Allegations that Ireland was slow to act against sham marriages blights the reputation of the country, Fine Gael has claimed.

The government must explain why it apparently took so long to clamp down on the practice, according to Sean Barrett TD, the party's spokesman on foreign affairs.

On Friday it emerged that the authorities have issued new guidelines to marriage registrars in a bid to halt residency seeking men from outside the EU paying women from eastern European thousands of euros to marry them.

But the measures were introduced amid claims that the Latvian authorities are unhappy with the length of time it took to take action.

Mr Barrett said he will be demanding answers in the Dail next week.

"The suggestion by the Latvian authorities that Ireland was slow to take the issue of sham marriages seriously and that, for some time, we ignored the seriousness of the matter is a very strong allegation to make," he said.

"While I am pleased that guidelines for registrars have now been introduced by Government to help wipe out the practice, I fail to understand how requests from other countries to deal with the matter were allegedly ignored for as long as has been suggested.

"I intend to raise this matter in the Dail on Tuesday so that the exact detail and circumstances surrounding the issue can be determined. Any situation which involves the exploitation of another person can not, and must not, be tolerated under any circumstance.

"The allegation that the Irish authorities failed to deal adequately, or indeed at all, with requests from Latvia to help stamp out the abuse of its citizens has extremely serious consequences for the reputation of our country.

"I will be seeking full details on the matter next week in the Dail and on why it took so long for these guidelines to be issued to help stamp out the often abusive practice of sham marriages."

Yes, I agree with the Latvian response considering the time every thing takes in the official departments here in Ireland. Every thing moves with the turtle pace. Ireland should have taken the matter seriously. Since, a lot of people in the street know when these shame marriages were taking place then how come a dept who's funded by our tax payer money kept silent and were oblivious to the situation....not buying it!!!

The problem with Ireland is that they are using these marriage of Convenience excuse to interfere with the rights of genuine couple to marry.

If they are serious about marrige of Convenience they will put rules, and at the same time make way for genuine couple.

Their intention is to stop everyone and impose hardship on couples.

They have made their position very clear. It is to reduce the number of people who can benefit from EU rules on freemovement.

If you look at their submission during Metock, that was their main concern.

It is disingenous for them to say they want to stop sham marriages

The journalist has some interesting suggestions here, there's even a section to leave comments on the Irish Times.
