OCI- what happens if passport expires?

Post by xyz123 » Fri May 06, 2011 12:08 pm

Hi

Posting on behalf of my uncle.

I know OCI is valid lifelong while PIO is only valid for 15 years. My uncle is 55 years old, has OCI and his british passport is expiring. What happens when he gets a new british passport?

I looked on two websites which are below:

https://passport.gov.in/oci/OnlineOCIMiscMain.jsp

http://www.immihelp.com/nri/pio-vs-oci.html

Both giving conflicting information. Immihelp website says OCI requires renewal if passport changes while the government website says only once after age of 50.

Specific link and quote from govt website as follows:

https://passport.gov.in/oci/guidlinesmisc.pdf

"OCI registration certificate and visa have got to be re-issued by availing this service, each time a new passport is issued up to the completion of 20 years of age and once after completing 50 years of age. "

Does above mean that after age of 50, one needs to change OCI on effectively the first renewal of foreign passport?

Normally one would following government website but just a bit uncertain as this is afterall an indian government website...

Thanks

While OCI remains valid for life, it is required that individuals of certain age group get their OCI re-issued. One reason that I can think of, given the age groups concerned, is perhaps the change in appearance (when growing up and when growing old).

And yes, your uncle should apply for re-issuance after he has renewed his British passport.

I am interested in knowing why the Indian Govt. states the OCI is lifelong since one needs to keep updating it for children until the age of 20 and once over the age of 50.

The information on the HCI website states that there is no need to keep updating OCI as it is for life and it does not detail the circumstances detailed above.
