What's happen if visa expired during application procession

Hello:

I am currently holding Tire 1 general visa which is expired on 21st
July 2011 and I am working for a company right now. I have post the
extension application to the home office recently and want to know
what happened if there is no decision coming back before my visa
expired date.

if there is no decision coming back before my visa expired date, for
example 22nd July 2011, could I continue working in UK legally or I
have to wait until the decision have made from home office? Thank you
