BNO/Ireland....

Post by mat1z » Mon Jun 12, 2006 11:47 am

hello there. hope this makes some sense. im trying to assist a friend here....ok,..
...can someone reside in ireland with a BNO passport?. the person in question is now 19. 20 in november, and heard something about restrictions in the UK is 18 whilst in ireland it is at 21 years of age.

the person came to the UK in july 2003, and applied as a student and then on to stay here as a dependent child. the solicitors in the case somewhere along the lines, went very wrong and at 18, and two years on, she was refused-as she is now an adult and has been told to leave the uk regardless. her brother is 16 and also a holder of a BNO passport.

her mother is a holder of a british passport-from the 97 hong kong changeover if that helps.

thank you very much and sorry if anything. 8)

As I understand it they need British citizen passports to live in the Republic of Ireland.

But you say: "her mother is a holder of a british passport-from the 97 hong kong changeover ... "

Can you be more specific. Is the mother a British citizen or also BNO, and if she's a British citizen then how did she get this status?

thanks, sorry im not so specific on this, but she got this in 1997 when there was the changeover-she denounced her pakistani status whilst in hong kong.
they are thinking on moving on to ireland to carry on their intention to become british citizens. so a bno passport will not be valid there?.
thanks again.

So are you saying she got British citizenship through the special provisions for Hong Kong? If so, then why were the children not registered too - is the father Chinese or something?

they are thinking on moving on to ireland to carry on their intention to become british citizens.
The Republic of Ireland is a different country, how can they expect to get British citizenship by living there?

so a bno passport will not be valid there?.
As already said - most probably the answer is NO. But why don't you write to the Irish authorities or look at their websites? http://www.justice.ie

And if mother is a British citizen, why is she not sponsoring the children for child settlement visas?

no bno holders can stay in ireland unless they have british citizenship. i think your friend can check out the home office website. it gives information how to apply for registration as british citizen from bno. i dont know what your friend done wrong, but most of the info for applying for registration as british citizen listed in the home office uk http://www.homeoffice.gov.uk/, so go check it out quick! i hope this help.

good luck
