Biometric process

Folks
I am just filling application for tier 1 exntesion along with my spouse application, can someone explain me about biometric process? All I know that HO will send an letter for an appointment?

I remember at LHR they have taken an finger print scan , so as for my spouse at Indian VFS office. Not sure if we still be called in for this appointment?
