Applying for British Passport from UK for child in India

Post by tribalboy » Wed Dec 28, 2011 11:59 am

Hi Guys,

I am a British Citizen and wanted to know if it is possible to apply for a British passport for my baby born in India while I am in the UK. My wife is an Indian Citizen and both the baby and my wife are currently in India.

Thanks in advance

If baby is British, then yes.

I think, you mean, if father is British. What, if person is on ILR status in UK & baby birth is in India. Would the new born be given British Passport or Indian Passport?

Thanks in advance

No. If baby is not British, then baby cannot get a British passport.

Hi,

Just to clarify I have naturalised as a British citizen and as British citizenship can descend to one generation born abroad my children will be British Citizens by descent. My question was if I could apply from the UK while the baby and the mother are in India. So to reply to your question "Family" I think your baby could have been a British Citizen if the child was born in the UK as both parents hold ILR but as none of you are naturalised I dont think this will be the case if your child is born outside the kingdom as you both are still Indians

Passport should be applied for in the country the applicant is in.
